Small Presses: 2 Publishers Open to Unagented Submissions

ManuscriptPic1-CindyFazziSmall and independent publishers often cater to an alternative market not targeted by big publishers. They are usually more flexible about accepting unsolicited manuscripts from unagented writers. If you’re looking for a traditional publisher, check out these two small presses.

Ink Smith Publishing

Ink Smith Publishing publishes 12 to 15 books a year. It will be open to submission from Feb. 1 to July 1, 2015. You may submit a novel (more than 50,000 words) or a novella (30,000 to 50,000 words). It doesn’t accept fan fiction or previously self-published books.

The California-based publisher accepts unsolicited manuscripts from unagented authors in these genres: general fiction, horror, science fiction, crime/mystery, thriller, adventure, fantasy

Send a query before submitting your manuscript. To read the submission guidelines, click here.

Native Ink Press

Nonfiction authors may submit to Native Ink press, an imprint of Ink Smith. Native Ink Press also currently accepts children’s fiction and nonfiction manuscripts. To read the submission guidelines, click here.

Dzanc Books

Dzanc Books, based in Ann Arbor, Mich., publishes literary fiction, including novels and short story collections. It also publishes an online literary journal and organizes a writing conference held in Lisbon, Portugal.

The independent publisher accepts novels through Submittable. It accepts short story collections through an annual contest, which requires a $25 submission fee.
