Small Presses: 2 Opportunities for Unpublished Literary Novels

If you have an unpublished and unrepresented literary novel, two small presses offer an opportunity within the next few months. Coffee House Press has open submissions right now, while the Restless Books Prize for New Immigrant Writing is sponsoring a fiction contest.

Coffee House Press

Coffee House Press, based in Minneapolis, opened its doors to unagented submissions on Sept. 1. There’s no fee to submit, but there’s a limit to the open submissions. The publisher will consider only the first 300 submissions.

“We will be reading novels, essays, and book-length nonfiction only,” according to the publisher. The company publishes 18 titles every year.

Restless Books Prize for New Immigrant Writing

“The ethos of the modern world is defined by immigrants. Their stories have always been an important component of our cultural consciousness, from Isaac Bashevis Singer to Isabel Allende, from Milan Kundera to Maxine Hong Kingston,” according to Ilan Stavans, Restless Books publisher. “We are looking for extraordinary unpublished submissions from emerging writers of sharp, culture-straddling writing that addresses identity in a global age.”

The writing contest alternates yearly between fiction and nonfiction. This year, the publisher is accepting novels until Feb. 28, 2018.  Restless Books is an independent, nonprofit publishing company based in New York.

To enter the writing contest, you must be a first-generation immigrant and you must not have published a book with a U.S. publisher. Your novel must have a word count of at least 45,000 words. There’s no fee to join the writing competition.
